NCAA Softball Regionals stunned many people. Here’s the top five craziest moments of “Mayhem” so far
There’s a reason the NCAA postseason for softball has become known as “Mayhem” in the past several seasons, and the 2026 season has been no exception.
The NCAA Regional round of the softball postseason was absolute madness with the upset victories and controversial moments throughout the weekend of play. Five of the 16 host sites had some sort of unimaginable dramatic scene play out. Here’s what happened, and how it impacted the outcome of regional play
Tuscaloosa Regional
Starting out with the No. 1 national seed, Alabama softball swept through its home regional in Tuscaloosa, but it wasn’t as easy as the scores show it. The Crimson Tide was facing Belmont in the game to set the undefeated seat in the championship game, and with the bases loaded, the Belmont pitcher Maya Johnson would walk in one of three runs scored in the matchup.
The controversial moment was the ball four call that clearly crossed home plate, and the internet went wild in response. This game would send the Bruins into the losers bracket and then home after the following game.

Alabama would make its way into the regional finals and into eventually onto the Super Regional round.
But the craziness doesn’t stop at the first host site.
Tallahassee Regional
Down in Tallahassee, the Florida State Seminoles were given a tough run for their money by in-state opponent UCF. The Knights would head to the catbird seat after Stetson defeated the Seminoles in the opening round, and when championship Sunday arrived, UFC would lose Game 1, but win the second.
The Knights have been sent to Tallahassee twice in the past for the postseason, but this would be the first time they would come out on top. Florida State would have its season ended on its home field for the first time since 2024.
Eugene Regional
Oregon was another promising team entering the 2026 NCAA Tournament, but due to infection to ace pitcher, Lyndsey Grein, the Ducks would be put at a disadvantage on their home field.
With their remaining pitchers, Oregon would win their opening game, but fall to Mississippi State in the 1-0 matchup. The Bulldogs’ pitcher Alyssa Faircloth tossed a no hitter versus the Ducks to send them into the losers bracket. Mississippi State would sweep their way through the Eugene Regional, and make it to Super Regionals without blinking.

Lubbock Regional
Back in Lubbock, Texas Tech and its head coach Gerry Glasco showcased the power of the transfer portal as they faced Ole Miss. The Rebels would take a 8-0 lead into the seventh inning of the 1-0 matchup in Lubbock, and the Red Raiders would come back to score eight runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, and walk the game off in the eighth 10-9.
Texas Tech has become the first team in NCAA postseason history to win a game after being down eight or more runs.
College Station Regional
The last regional site to have madness ensue was down in College Station. The Texas A&M Aggies would fall at home for the second consecutive year. In 2025, the Aggies fell to Liberty, and in 2025, Arizona State would come through the College Station Regional and take it all.
The Sun Devils topped Texas A&M in the 1-0 matchup, and would sweep their way through the contest. On championship Sunday, the Aggies were mercy-ruled on their home field, falling 9-1 in five innings of play.
All of this madness at these five host sites brings everything to the next round of the NCAA Tournament: Super Regionals.
Super Regionals will be played from May 21 to May 24 depending on the location and if the winner-take-all game is necessary.
